Move from the App Store edition to the direct edition
Redeem a valid existing store purchase for an activation code and keep the corresponding Pro entitlement in the direct edition, without buying again.
1. Get your code in the store edition first
Keep the store edition installed, restore your paid purchase on the membership page if needed, then choose “Get Activation Code”. Wait for verification and save the code securely. Do not share it publicly.
If “Get Activation Code” is missing, do not replace the store edition yet. Wait for a store update that includes redemption. A free trial alone does not qualify for a paid activation code.
2. Back up settings, then replace the app
To keep device settings and app rules, export a backup from Settings → General → Configuration Migration. Quit Better Volume, get the direct edition from the download page, extract it, and drag it into Applications to replace the old edition. Both editions share one app identity and cannot coexist. Do not delete Keychain records or system permissions to switch editions.
3. Enter your code in the direct edition
Open the app from Applications and choose “Enter Activation Code” on the membership page. Verify online, then import your settings backup if needed. Activating the direct edition on the same computer does not consume another device slot.
How are the three devices counted?
Repeated claims for the same store purchase return the same code. The first claiming computer permanently occupies one slot, leaving two more computers. Claiming or activating on another computer uses a slot, up to three; a fourth is rejected. This limit applies to the redeemed code, not the installation rules of the original App Store purchase.
Uninstalling, reinstalling or stopping use does not release a slot. Neither self-service nor manual transfers are offered. A new computer or motherboard change that changes the machine identifier counts as a new machine. Choose the computer to bind before claiming.
What happens to annual and lifetime purchases?
A lifetime store purchase keeps its lifetime entitlement. Annual subscriptions remain subject to their valid period as verified with Apple; redemption does not convert them to a website lifetime purchase or create a new website subscription. Apple continues to handle renewal, cancellation and refunds. First activation requires internet access; offline use lasts up to 30 days and never beyond the subscription’s validity. Refunds or revocation affect the corresponding license.
Already replaced the store edition without a code?
Quit the direct edition and download the store edition again through the App Store. Restore the original purchase and claim the code, then install the direct edition as described above. Do not pay again to restore existing rights. If the public store release does not yet include redemption, keep using the store edition for now.
Updating an older direct edition
Update on the original computer and verify online using your existing code. The new version associates legacy installation records with a stable machine identifier; linked records for the same computer do not count twice. If old records already occupy all three slots, update and verify on the original installations before claiming a store code. Contact support to investigate errors; support does not release or transfer permanent device bindings.
